Miss Universe 2018 is slated to be held on December 17 (December 16 Eastern Time) at Impact, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand. All 93 beauties representing their respective countries will hit the ramp at the 67th beauty pageant. As the event is nearing, Miss Universe 2018 is making the headlines almost every day. While some are inspiring, the others are simply nasty, like the recent viral video of Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers making fun of Miss Cambodia Rern Sinat and Miss Vietnam H’Hen Nie over their English-speaking skills. Clearly, her mockery was not appreciated by the netizens for the right reasons. After facing intense criticism, the beauty queen from the United States has reportedly apologised for her behaviour. On her comments in an Instagram post, 24-year-old Summers said, “In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize. My life, friendships, and career revolve around me being a compassionate and empathetic woman. I would never intend to hurt another. I am grateful for opportunities to speak with Nat, Miss Cambodia, and H’Hen, Miss Vietnam, directly about this experience. These are the moments that matter most to me.” Miss World Mexico Winner Vanessa Ponce de Leon Becomes First Mexican to Become Miss World 2018!

@MissUniverse is an opportunity for women from around the world to learn about each other’s cultures, life experiences, and views. We all come from different backgrounds and can grow alongside one another. In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize. My life, friendships, and career revolve around me being a compassionate and empathetic woman. I would never intend to hurt another. Regina George, is that you? This is basically like the most dramatic reality show, but condensed into 1 minute lol. @sarahrosesummers hopefully will prove that ignorance will not win you a @missuniverse title...whatever that means these days. This is basically what normalized xenophobia looks like. If she’s trying to show empathy, the condescending, intolerant tone tells a different story. A reminder that you’re participating in a competition in a country/continent where English is NOT the primary language. In the now-expired live Instagram video, Miss USA Rose Summers was heard saying for Sinat, “Miss Cambodia is here and doesn’t speak any English, and not a single person here speaks her language. Francesca [Miss Australia] said that it would be very isolating.” For H’Hen Nie, she said, “She’s so cute and she pretends to know so much English, and you ask her a question and after having a whole English conversation with her, she goes..” imitating her smile.
The beauty pageants across the universe uphold the unanimity of all the women coming together challenging the serotypes, displaying their talents, learning each other’s traditions and winning millions of hearts with their positive thoughts striving for a change. But incidents like the recent one really takes away the grace from these beauty contests. It is unclear whether Miss USA apologised after realising that her comment was hurtful or due to the criticisms. But our excitement for Miss Universe 2018 stays the same!
