New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) Following are the highlights of the Supreme Court's verdict on Friday that granted bail to senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia in the corruption and money-laundering cases linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam:
* SC grants bail to Sisodia, notes that he was in custody for around 17 months and the trial had not yet commenced
* SC says prolonged incarceration before being pronounced guilty of an offence should not be permitted to become punishment without trial
* SC says it was high time trial courts and high courts recognised the principle that "bail is rule and jail is exception"
* SC says right to speedy trial and liberty were "sacrosanct"
* SC says citizens could not be made to run from pillar to post in matters pertaining to life and liberty, which was one of the most sacrosanct rights guaranteed by the Constitution
* SC says trial court's finding that Sisodia was responsible for delaying trial in these cases was not supported by the record
* SC sets aside Delhi High Court's May 21 verdict, which denied bail to Sisodia in these cases. PTI
