When we talk about artificial intelligence, there is hardwired imagery of massive thinking machines working in a science-fiction environment. Since AI technology has become the talk among many scholars and researchers, it is essential for more students to know about its functions. After all, they are going to give creative shape towards the growth of AI’s industry in the future. Hence, to understand the rapid advancement of technology and master the concept of AI, many educationists from across the world are initiating educational institutions to include Artificial Intelligence in their syllabus. Promoting just that, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad will launch a full-fledged B tech program in AI from the coming academic year 2019-20. “AI solutions are particularly promising for India (given the availability of a large corpus of data) where it can have a major positive impact on several critical domains such as healthcare, crop and soil management, weather prediction, surveillance and security, and defence. Long term and robust solutions to problems in these domains require a systematic and disciplined approach that is rooted in the fundamentals of AI. However, the demand for professionals trained in this area far exceeds the current supply. The BTech program in AI is a step in the direction of addressing this highly skewed demand-supply scenario,” Dr Sumohana Channappayya, Dean (Research and Development) was quoted in NDTV report, highlighting the features of this course.

IIT Hyderabad is also the third famous institute globally after US-based Carnegie Mellon University and Massachusetts Institutes of Technology (MIT). The institute is already offering a Masters of Technology (MTech) program in Artificial Intelligence—Machine Learning and MTech in Data Science. Students who would pursue other degrees like BTech in Chemical Engineering can also pursue a minor in AI from the upcoming academic year.
