Is Tom Cruise a superhuman in real life? That's the one thought that keeps crossing my mind, every time an action scene ends in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. As you might be aware by now, Tom Cruise does most of the stunts in the franchise, which he also serves as a producer, and MI - Fallout has no change in that rule. Director Christopher McQuarrie, who also directed the previous MI instalment Rogue Nation (makes sense to retain him as Fallout is a continuation of RN) serves enough action scenes for the stuntman in the 56-year old Tom Cruise to flourish, and we are left with our jaws hanging.

Like every Mission Impossible movie, Fallout also goes country-hopping and in the process, has some very impressive scenes worthy of the franchise made to floor the fans. Sure, the plot is nothing to crow about and is filled with potholes like the roads in Mumbai after rains, but when the ride is this exciting and relentless, who is complaining? After all, Cruise as Ethan Hunt never often takes the straight road most often!

In this feature, we will look at seven such scenes in Mission: Impossible - Fallout that left us in awe! Needless to say, enough SPOILERS ahead!

The Newsroom hoax

The first scene in the movie that makes the most impression has no action. Hunt loses three plutonium devices in an ambush but captures one of the villain's men. The next scene we see that news channels are screaming how those devices are used to nuke Rome, Jerusalem and Mecca and Hunt looking guilty over it. We realise he is next to the hospital bed of the caught weapons expert. After goading him to reveal the details of his employer by convincing him of his 'nuclear victory', Hunt and his team show the ace hidden in the sleeve - the news was all fake and we are introduced to the first rubber mask of the film.

The one-shot sky-diving

A reluctant Hunt takes CIA agent Walker (Henry Cavill) for a covert mission in Paris. As they skydive their way from a plane to a night-club in the city, Walker is struck by lightning in the process and is rendered unconscious, while it is up to Hunt to save him before he hits the ground dead. The speciality about the whole scene is that it is shot as if in one take (with some hidden clever editing)

The washroom brawl

Not every best action scene in the movie is about high-octane stunts and spectacles. There are a couple of scenes with some terrific fist-to-fist action choreography. Like the brawl in the men's washroom in the Parisian nightclub, where Hunt and Walker try to take down a decoy Lark, who proves more handful than they thought and could only be taken down with a grateful intervention of Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson)

Kidnapping Lane and the bike chase that follows

The alluring White Widow (Vanessa Kirby) who has the info of the plutonium devices, asks Hunt to release Rogue Nation's villain, Solomon Lane (an excellent Sean Harris) from the authorities while in transit. What follows is an exciting sequence of Hunt changing the plan, a cool shot of Lane getting submerged in water in his convoy truck, and Hunt zipping away on the lanes of Paris in a bike running away the police.

Trapping Walker and the ensuing shootout

That Henry Cavill's character is an antagonist is something the trailers already gave out, and this is how even the movie plays out. But the scene that leads to his reveal as the real Lark and how Hunt makes him confess the truth through Benji (Simon Pegg) in disguise of Lane is well-done. The ensuing shootout is also captivating, resulting in the death of a major supporting character.

Another one-take shot of Hunt jumping from a rooftop

We all know how Ethan Hunt loves to run, don't we? But do you know that he is a great jumper? Following the shootout in the tunnels, Walker escapes and Hunt tries to catch up with him by running through rooftops and through office buildings. There is a particularly awesome shot of Tom Cruise running through a rooftop with the camera following him, and then to our complete surprise, take a huge leap to the next building, all in one shot. It was reportedly this scene where Cruise had his leg broken IRL, but it pays off in a great way on screen!

The climactic showdown

The final 20 minutes of the movie is pure insanity. Hunt and his team discover that the bombs are in Kashmir (Actually New Zealand, since Cruise didn't get permission to shoot there). What follows is a terrific chase between Hunt and Walker now on helicopters (Cruise had learnt helicopter piloting for this scene), that ends in a literal cliffhanger, as Hunt desperately tries to get hold of the detonator from Walker. Running parallel to this is a small-scale but equally effective fight scene between Lane, Faust and Benji, where we are actually worried about the mortality of a fan-favourite character.
