50 Years Of Amitabh Bachchan: When The Bollywood Legend Quit A Rs 1600 Paying Job And Debuted In Saat Hindustani

Amitabh Bachchan, a man who defines Bollywood at so many levels. A man who has made the 70s an amazing decade to be. A man who has inspired generations after generations, a man whose films are still watched and revered...that man completes 50 years in the industry. Yes this day in 1969, Saat Hindustani released and we were blessed with a brilliant actor like Amitabh Bachchan. But did you know Bachchan had given up a Rs 1600 paying job to accept a part in the film for all of Rs 5000? Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan To Inaugurate 25th Kolkata International Film Festival on November 8

Quoting director Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, a Mumbai Mirror report says, ""I was astonished. 'You mean to say that you resigned a job of sixteen hundred rupees a month just on the chance of getting this role! Suppose we can't give the role to you?' He said, 'One has to take such chances' with such conviction that I said, 'The role is yours.'"

Saat Hindustani was set during the time when Goa was under the Portuguese rule. Director Khwaja Ahmed Abbas had put together a cross-casting crew for his film with seven men and a woman. So there was a Bengali playing a Punjabi while a Malayalam hero played a Bengali character. Finally, he was looking for someone to play a Urdu fanatic and Bachchan made it. The director's requirement was that the character be thin. But as per Mumbai Mirror, AB had inquired about the Punjabi character after he listened to the story.

It was difficult to summarise what we are feeling for AB today, so Abhishek Bachchan helped us put it together...

We too hope there will be 50 more years where we will watch Bachchan do more and more amazing movies.
