Patna, April 30: A man in Bihar's Katihar district showed up late to his wedding, following which his bride cancelled the marriage, and her family held the groom's parents hostage in a bid to recover their expenses. In this bizarre case, the woman's family demanded Rs 4 lakh from the man's parents as compensation.

The report by India Today said the incident occurred in Kursela village, and the man, identified as Manjit Chowdhry, was a resident of Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district. People on the bride's side waited till late at night for the wedding procession to show up at the marriage hall in Kursela, but no one arrived. Bride Cancels Wedding as Groom Fails to Recite Table of Two in Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba.

Angered by the situation, the family members of the bride, Manisha Kumari, went on the lookout for Manjit and found him unconscious inside a car on the road. When they brought him to the venue in the morning, he was found to be heavily intoxicated. On seeing the condition of her would-be groom, Manisha refused to get married. She also claimed that Manjit was given alcohol while he was coming to the marriage hall and said he would be held hostage until her family recovered Rs 4 lakh that they spent on wedding expenses.

The locals in the area also agreed to keep Manjit and his parents as hostages until they paid the amount. However, some members of the groom's side managed to arrange the amount paid to the bride's family, after which they were allowed to leave the marriage hall. Speaking to Bihar Tak, India Today TV's sister channel, Manjit said that while he was leaving for the venue, some of his friends got inside his car and forcibly asked him to consume something which made him sick. "I don't know what they gave me, but I was heavily intoxicated," he said. Manjit also said that Manisha "refused to marry me since we arrived late, and I was also heavily intoxicated".

But Manisha's brother said that Manjit's family was lying that he was sick and, in fact, he was an alcoholic. "When we saw him inside the car, his family said he had fallen sick and they were going to consult a doctor. He tried to flee, but we caught him and took him to the marriage hall. This incident has caused immense embarrassment to our family. I did want to ruin my sister's life by getting her married to an alcoholic," he told the media outlet.
