Difference Between Tomato Sauce and Ketchup

Ingredients: Tomato sauce is made from a variety of ingredients other than tomatoes. There is oil, meat or vegetable stock used to make a sauce. It rarely uses vinegar and sugar in the preparation. The sauce can also be served hot.

Tomato ketchup is made with tomatoes, sugar, vinegar/acetic acid and spices. Ketchup uses more variety of spices and the vinegar is a key ingredient which also causes a slight change in the taste of the two condiments. Ketchup is also served cold.

Texture: A sauce has a thinner consistency whereas ketchup is thicker.

Taste: A sauce is not as sweet as ketchup. Depending on the ingredients used, the taste of sauces differ and which is why we have more varieties in sauces like salsa, barbeque, mayonnaise, chillies, etc.
